India or the Philippines: which should you outsource to?
India vs Philippines outsourcing, compared by role type, time zone, cost and talent depth, so you can pick by the work instead of by reputation.
India and the Philippines are the 2 countries most North American companies consider first for outsourcing, and the honest answer is that neither wins outright. They are strong at different things.
We deliver from Chennai, so take the recommendation with that in mind. What follows is the comparison we would give a friend: pick by the work, not by the country’s reputation.
The short version
Choose the Philippines for voice-led customer service, where accent familiarity and a culturally American communication style carry real weight.
Choose India for technical, financial and analytical roles: software, IT support, accounting, data work, recruitment and back-office operations. The professional talent pool is deeper and costs are generally lower for the same qualification level.
India vs Philippines outsourcing, compared properly
| India | Philippines | |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest roles | IT, software, finance, accounting, data, recruitment, back office | Voice support, customer service, virtual assistance |
| Talent pool | Very large graduate output in engineering, IT and commerce | Large pool concentrated in service and support roles |
| English | Working language of business and higher education | Widely spoken, with accent familiarity to US listeners |
| Time zone | UTC+5:30, 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto (10.5 in winter) | UTC+8, 12 hours ahead of Toronto (13 in winter) |
| Overnight coverage | Work finishes before your day starts | Similar, with a slightly later overlap |
| Cost level | Generally lower for professional roles | Competitive for support roles |
| Employment route | EOR, or your own entity | EOR, or your own entity |
Time zones in practice
India Standard Time is 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto and New York in summer and 10.5 hours in winter. Manila is 12 hours ahead in summer and 13 in winter. In practice both give you the same 2 options, and the choice matters more than the country.
Follow the sun. Your team works their own daytime, finishes while you sleep and leaves the work done. Best for processing, bookkeeping, development and anything that does not need conversation.
Overlap your hours. Your team works a shift that covers part or all of your business day. Necessary for live support, and worth paying a shift premium for when the role needs real-time collaboration.
Teams on night shifts need to be paid and supported properly, in either country. A provider who treats the night shift as an afterthought will churn through people, and you will feel it.
Where the Philippines genuinely wins
If your work is inbound phone support for US consumers, the Philippines has a long-standing advantage. Decades of US-facing call centre work built an accent profile and a service culture that American callers find familiar, and that familiarity shows up in customer satisfaction scores.
We will say that plainly even though we deliver from India. If phone-based consumer support is the whole job, that is where we would look.
Where India wins
For professional and technical work the depth of the Indian talent pool is hard to match. Chennai alone has a long-established base in IT services, engineering and finance, and qualified accountants are available in numbers that smaller markets cannot offer.
It also matters for the roles people forget to plan for: the analyst who automates the report, the developer who fixes the integration, the recruiter who sources candidates in a market you do not know. Those are easier to hire in India, and easier to replace there too.
What should not decide it
Hourly rate alone. A 15% rate difference is noise next to a team that turns over twice a year.
Anecdotes. Someone’s bad experience with a freelancer in either country tells you about that arrangement, not the country.
Headline company names. Which large companies run centres where says little about what a 3-person team will be like for you.
What should decide it
- the type of work: voice-led service or professional and technical
- whether you need real-time overlap or overnight completion
- the depth of the local talent pool for your specific role
- who legally employs the person, and how they are paid
- whether the provider operates its own office or subcontracts
What the cost difference really looks like
Headline rates in both countries are close enough that cost rarely decides it on its own. Where they do diverge is at the senior and technical end, where India’s larger pool of qualified accountants, engineers and developers tends to price lower for the same credential.
The bigger cost variable is not the country at all. It is turnover. Replacing a trained team member costs you the recruitment, the ramp-up and the mistakes made during it, and that bill dwarfs a few dollars an hour. Whichever country you pick, pay a fair local wage and you will spend less overall.
Questions to ask a provider in either country
- Do you operate your own office, or subcontract to another company?
- Is my team member your employee, or a contractor?
- What is their actual salary, and can I raise it?
- What is your annual staff turnover?
- Which shift will they work, and is it paid at a premium?
- Who in my time zone do I call when something goes wrong?
The answers tell you more about how the engagement will feel than any country comparison can.
Holidays and coverage
One practical difference people miss until the first long weekend: the public holiday calendars do not line up with yours, or with each other. India has national holidays plus state-level ones, so a Chennai team and a Delhi team will not always be off on the same days. The Philippines has its own list.
Ask for the calendar at the start of the engagement and plan your month-end and campaign dates around it. For roles where a gap is costly, cross-train a second person so cover exists. This is an easy problem to solve in advance and an annoying one to discover on the day.
A third option people forget
You do not have to pick one country for everything. Companies run support in one location and finance or development in another. It costs more administratively, so it is worth it from a few seats upward, not from 1.

FAQ’s
01.Does Bumsa have its own office in India?
Yes. Bumsa runs its own office in Chennai, where our dedicated staff work. It is our own facility, not a co-working space or a network of home workers, and the same company runs it and serves you from our Toronto head office.
02.Can an India-based team work North American business hours?
Yes. Staff can work shifts that fully or partly overlap Eastern or Pacific time, or work Indian daytime hours so tasks are finished before your day starts. You choose the shift when we set up the role.
03.How will we communicate with our offshore team?
The same way you work with in-house staff: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, email and your project tools. Staff are fluent in English, and you also have a Toronto-based contact for contracts and billing.
04.Do you work with companies in the United States as well as Canada?
Yes. Bumsa is headquartered in Toronto and serves clients across Canada and the United States, with work delivered from our Chennai office.
05.Do you work with small businesses and startups?
Yes. Offshore staffing is often most valuable for small firms that need skilled help without the cost of a local hire. You can start with one dedicated employee and grow from there.
