Why companies outsource to India, and when it goes wrong
Why do companies outsource to India? The real reasons, the risks, and how a dedicated team in a managed office avoids the problems.
Search for outsourcing to India and you get two kinds of results. Case studies about companies that cut costs in half, and forum threads from people who swore never to do it again.
Both are describing real experiences. The difference usually comes down to the model, not the country. Here is why companies outsource to India, what actually goes wrong, and what separates the two outcomes.
The 3 reasons companies outsource to India
Ask 10 companies why they hire in India and you will hear versions of the same 3 answers.
A deep, English-speaking professional workforce. India graduates a very large number of accounting, engineering, IT and business students every year, and English is the working language of its corporate sector. Chennai in particular has a long-established base in finance, IT and back-office operations.
Lower total employment cost. The saving is not only salary. It is salary plus benefits, payroll taxes, office space, equipment and the management time you would spend recruiting locally.
More hours in the day. India Standard Time runs 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto and New York in summer, and 10.5 hours in winter. A team working Indian business hours finishes work while you sleep. A team on an overlapping shift works alongside you for part of the day. You choose which.
What companies actually outsource
Almost any role done at a computer can be done from an offshore office. The work we are asked for most often is:
- bookkeeping, accounts payable and accounts receivable
- data entry and document processing
- customer support by email, chat and phone
- recruitment sourcing and interview coordination
- IT support and software development
- digital marketing execution, including SEO and content production
- administrative and back-office support
At Bumsa these sit under 3 services. BPO for ongoing process work, RPO for recruitment, and EOR when you want to employ someone in India as your own team member.
Why outsourcing to India gets a bad name
The complaints are consistent, and they are worth taking seriously. Work comes back late or wrong. The person who did the good work disappears and someone new starts from zero. Nobody is awake when you need an answer. Data goes somewhere you cannot see.
Look closely at those stories and the same 3 setups keep appearing.
Freelancer marketplaces. You are one of several clients on someone’s screen. There is no employer standing behind them, no notice period, and no replacement if they stop replying.
Shared agent pools. A vendor assigns whoever is free that day. Nobody accumulates knowledge of your business, so you re-explain the same process every month.
Unmanaged home workers. A cheap hourly rate, a home internet connection and no supervision. This is where most security and reliability problems start.
None of these are outsourcing problems. They are staffing problems that happen to be offshore.
What a dedicated team model changes
A dedicated offshore team is a different arrangement. The people are full-time employees who work only on your account. They work from a managed office on company equipment. Somebody local is responsible for attendance, HR and the working environment, and you direct the work itself.
That single change fixes most of the failure list. Knowledge stays with people who stay. Attendance is visible. Devices and access are controlled. And if someone does leave, replacing them is the provider’s job, not yours.
Bumsa runs this model from its own office in Chennai, managed from our head office in Toronto. Staff can also work remotely or hybrid where the role suits it, but the default is an office with supervision.
The 3 models compared
| What you get | Freelancer marketplace | Shared vendor team | Dedicated team (Bumsa) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works only for you | No | No | Yes |
| Employment status | Self-employed | Vendor’s staff, rotating | Full-time employee on your account |
| Where they work | Unknown | Vendor floor | Managed Chennai office, remote or hybrid by agreement |
| If they leave | Your problem | New person, no handover | We recruit the replacement |
| Who directs the work | You, loosely | The vendor | You, directly |
| Cost shape | Hourly, variable | Per seat or per transaction | Salary you set, plus a transparent markup |
Is it the right move for your business?
Outsourcing to India works best when the work is ongoing, repeatable and done on a computer, and when you can describe how you want it done. A month of messy, undocumented work does not become clean simply because it moved offshore.
It works less well for work that needs someone physically present, or for a role you cannot define yet. If you are not sure which side your work falls on, start with 1 person and a narrow scope rather than a team of 5.
What to hand over first
The first thing you move offshore should be the work you can describe most precisely. That usually means a process with a clear input, a clear output and a rule for the edge cases: invoice processing, first-line support, candidate sourcing, report preparation.
Write the process down before the person starts, even roughly. A screen recording and a one-page checklist beat 3 weeks of watching over their shoulder. Then expand the scope once the basics are running, rather than handing over everything in week 1.
Keep the first review cycle short. A 15-minute check-in each morning for the first fortnight catches misunderstandings while they are still cheap to fix.
What about data security?
This is the question most buyers ask before cost. The answer depends entirely on the setup. Work done in a managed office on company-controlled devices, with access granted through your own systems and revoked by you, is a very different risk profile from a freelancer on a personal laptop.
Ask any provider 4 things: who employs the person, what device they work on, how they reach your systems, and what they signed. If the answers are vague, the security is vague.
Working out the numbers
The honest comparison is not salary against salary. It is your fully loaded local cost, including benefits, payroll taxes, desk space and equipment, against the all-in monthly cost of an offshore seat. Our cost saving calculator does that comparison for a specific role.

FAQ’s
01.What is offshore staffing, and how is it different from outsourcing?
Offshore staffing means you get full-time people in another country who work only on your business, under your direction. Traditional outsourcing hands a whole task to a vendor, who decides who does it. With Bumsa, your dedicated staff work from our Chennai office and follow your processes, tools and priorities.
02.Does outsourcing to India actually work?
Yes, when the model is right. Most problems come from freelancers, shared agents or remote workers nobody manages. Outsourcing works when staff are dedicated to you, work from a supervised office and are managed with clear processes. That is how Bumsa's Chennai team operates.
03.What kind of work can we outsource to India?
Most work done at a computer can be outsourced: bookkeeping and accounts payable, data entry, customer support, recruitment coordination, IT support, software development, digital marketing and admin. Bumsa staffs these roles through its BPO, RPO and EOR services.
04.Is a dedicated offshore team better than hiring freelancers?
For ongoing work, yes. Freelancers split their time across clients, work from unsecured locations and can leave without notice. A Bumsa team member is a full-time employee in a secure Chennai office who works only on your account. If they leave, we replace them.
05.Should we outsource to India or the Philippines?
Both are strong. India offers a larger pool of graduates in accounting, IT and technical roles, often at lower cost, while the Philippines is known mainly for voice-based customer service. For finance, back-office, tech and recruitment roles, India is usually the better fit.
